A Shout Out to the 30, 40 and 50-somethings!

Reviewed August 2026

You might think I'm tossing out these thoughts for people who are in an older age bracket. It's good to remind that cohort that they can do more than they think they can, but I'm actually talking to the 30 to 50-somethings out there. People in this age bracket are often going through a stage of life where personal fitness and health slip to the bottom of their priority list ~ kid-wrangling, socialising in downtime, or work commitments fill busy days.

A shout out to these people: generally at 30 people are strong, fit and healthy, and they haven't had to put too much focus on the point to maintain this state. However, from this point there is a natural steady deterioration in the quality of tissues in the body ~ be it bone density, muscle strength, collagen elasticity...the impacts are felt throughout the body.

It takes conscious maintenance to keep your frame in good condition from this point on. You can get miffed about this, or you can be motivated by the idea that it's all stuff that's in your control. You can do this, and you can do it well.

I see so many people who are trying to latch the gate after the horse has bolted. These people wrestle with shaky balance, pelvic floor issues, the frustrations of limited ability in what they can do physically and more. They're having trouble doing the things they love or the things they'd like to do now that they have the time to enjoy them. We can definitely help these people, but it can be a long slog of rehabilitating their frame and their brain so they can do the things they want to do.

When you stop using all the wonderful variety of movements and abilities our awesome body can do, our equally awesome brain starts to edit those options out of possibility. The brain is editing itself according to your usage patterns through a process called neuroplasticity (read more here).

So, to extrapolate one example ~ if you don't practise getting down to the floor, sitting comfortably on the floor for periods of time and getting up off the floor gracefully under your own steam then the brain forgets how to conduct the orchestra of body movement that makes these actions possible and the muscles deteriorate (having become weaker through lack of use) so they don't have the power even if the brain did know how to coordinate them. The whole process becomes uncomfortable...then scary and/or painful...then not an option at all.

For the 30, 40 and 50-somethings...use it or lose it baby!
