Chiropractic Care. It's not just about backs.

When most people think about chiropractic care, they think about pain.
A sore neck. A tight lower back. Headaches that won't budge.
And yes, helping people move better and feel better is something we do every day.
But what if spinal care is influencing more than muscles and joints? What if measurable changes are happening at the level of the nervous system and stress physiology?
A 2025 randomized, controlled, peer reviewed trial published in PLOS One looked beyond symptom scores and examined physiological biomarkers over a 16-week period. Researchers measured stress hormones, inflammatory markers, immune cell activity and a protein involved in brain adaptability.
These aren't opinion-based measures. They're laboratory markers.
The study followed adults with mild, recurring spinal tension — not people in acute crisis. Participants received 12 weeks of chiropractic adjustments or a comparison intervention. Blood, saliva and hair samples were analysed to observe biological changes over time.
One of the findings was an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the chiropractic group. BDNF is associated with neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to adapt and respond to its environment. In broader scientific literature, higher BDNF levels are linked with resilience and cognitive health.
Researchers also observed differences in certain inflammatory markers. TNF-α levels were lower in the chiropractic group. IL-6 rose temporarily without an increase in CRP. This is a pattern the authors note can occur with normal physiological adaptation, such as exercise or when muscles are healing.
Stress hormone patterns shifted as well. Cortisol levels changed during care and differed at follow-up compared to the comparison group. The researchers suggested this may reflect chiropractic adjustments having a modulating effect on stress-related physiology, while acknowledging further research is needed.
Importantly, these participants were not highly symptomatic. They had mild, recurrent spinal dysfunction. The kind many people live with and call normal. Yet measurable biological differences were observed with chiropractic care.
This doesn't mean chiropractic care treats immune disorders or replaces medical management. What it does suggest is that spinal care may influence aspects of nervous system regulation in ways we are only beginning to understand.

Chiropractic care primarily addresses the musculoskeletal system. Emerging research is exploring how that mechanical input may also influence broader physiological processes.
We help backs. Absolutely.
But the conversation around spinal health is getting bigger, and the science is getting more interesting.
