The basics of health and wellbeing
Reviewed August 2026
But hold on... what about genetics? Yes, we all tend to blame our parents for the way our body operates - like incessantly cold hands in winter, but the truth is we have all partaken of the genetic lottery.
On that front we've got what we've got. We can be disappointed about bits of it – that's totally human, but it doesn't help anything. Falling into a victim headspace over genetics is like hitting your head on a brick wall...nothing good will come of it (except that it feels great when we stop!). We work with the genetic hand we've been dealt.
Headspace
Where our head is at affects everything – consciously or not. A stressed/anxious/depressed mindset will flavour every perspective you have and every choice you make, and not in a good way – it shifts considered choices to emotional reactions with a less than optimal result.
We have seen imaging of a person's spine that looks like a disaster for movement and function, but that person in real life is moving well and pain free. Equally we have seen imaging that looks textbook perfect, and the body it belongs to is pain wracked and stopped from doing what they love to do. A lot of the difference is headspace.
People forget – a good headspace requires maintenance each day. It is said we should spend as much time on our headspace each week as we do on our physical wellbeing (that's 3 and ½ hours on eachone every week – or 30 min on each one every day).
Diet
You don't have to be a naturopath or dietician to know there's foods that just "don't sit well" with you. There are a gazillion "fad diets" and those that purport to be scientifically vetted. There are foods that we know are good for us and those we know should feature rarely on our plates. We know what the good choices are and we know we feel healthier when we make those good choices.
Frame
Whether we are brand new or cherishing the twinkles in our wrinkles, our physical frame reflects the things we've done to it throughout our lifetime - everything from sporting efforts and child birth to poor posture and traumatic injuries. Our bodies will cope, adapt and survive right up until they hit a threshold where they can't any longer, and then we get symptoms – including pain. Just like the expression "so many straws on a camel's back". One of the things we do as chiropractors is to identify as many of these "straws" as possible and advise you on how to tweak your day to day life to minimise the impact they are having on your body.
We're not telling you anything new here. You know this. We just want to remind you that your health is your responsibility and a result of your day to day choices. Yes, it's tricky shifting from "I know" to "I do", but you are the only one who can work to change your state of health if you are not happy with where it currently sits. Collate a great coaching team from the health experts available (GP, chiro, physio, naturopath, massage therapist, acupuncturist...). Gather the relevant current information about where your health is at, then make some good choices and work towards your health goals. You can create this change with time and effort. In fact, you are the only one who can do it. It is in your power...
